When backpacking and faced with extreme weather, such as a sudden rain, hail, or snowstorm, having a bivy with you is a great thing. Designed to protect backpackers and hikers from not-awesome weather, bivy sacks easily slip over sleeping bags, providing additional warmth as well as protection against the elements.

The Aqua-Quest ‘Single Pole’ Waterproof & Breathable Ultra Light Bivy Bivouac is a quality bivy option, however it fails slightly in regards to the condensation issue. Nevertheless, it’s warm, comfortable, and takes no time to set up.

The Condensation Issue

Before we get into the good things about this nifty piece of camping gear, let’s review the whole condensation thing. Bivy sacks were invented so climbers making their way up steep mountain sides could protect themselves from the high winds and extreme temperatures that so often accompany such treks. And as well as they work in keeping the elements where they belong–outside–they traditionally have had problems with condensation when used during cold weather. Many bivy sacks available today are designed to reduce if not eliminate this issue, however even those that promise a condensation-free experience must be tried out to ensure the claim is true.

The Aqua-Quest ‘Single Pole’ Waterproof & Breathable Ultra Light Bivy Bivouac unfortunately doesn’t pass the condensation test. While the problem is limited primarily to colder weather, condensation with this bivy sack can get pretty darn bad. You’ll wake up to quite a bit of moisture in the morning, from your own sweat and condensation from your breath and body, however you can leave the top open a tad bit to allow for extra ventilation. This is key if you plan on purchasing this bivy sack!

Great Bug Protection

Sleeping on the ground in the woods or desert means insects are sure to find you. And possibly crawl on you. And possibly bite you. This single pole bivy sack works well at keeping critters from crawling on you, which is certainly not what you want to wake up to.

Waterproof with Zip-Up Rain Cover

The Aqua-Quest ‘Single Pole’ Waterproof & Breathable Ultra Light Bivy Bivouac is completely and totally waterproof–you won’t have any trouble there. A super-cool feature is the bivy’s small window, which accompanies its zip-up rain cover. Likened to “peeping out of a welder’s mask,” this cool feature allows you watch the starry skies and any surrounding storms without getting soaked or struck by lightning.

Quality Material, Less-Than-Quality Pole

Made with high-quality Laminated ESTER PU Coated 70-D Ripstop Nylon Taffeta, this bivy includes a fixed rear mesh panel for added circulation. The pole is made of lightweight aluminum, and it doesn’t take much to break it. Take extra care when using the pole, but know that if it does break, Aqua will likely send you a new one free of charge. This isn’t an incentive to break the darn thing of course, but it’s nice to know!

Really, Really Warm

You might want to use the Aqua-Quest ‘Single Pole’ Ultra Light Bivy Bivouac when the weather is the most temperate, such as late spring and early fall. Using it in summer easily results in waking up sweaty, so unless you love camping in wetlands, you’ll probably be just fine without it in the summer.

Wrap-Up

Despite the potential condensation issues, this bivy is a quality, waterproof option you’ll be happy to use again and again. Lightweight, easy to set up, and featuring the super-cool ‘lil window, the Aqua-Quest ‘Single Pole’ Waterproof & Breathable Ultra Light Bivy Bivouac is ideal for those who want extra protection from bugs or when they know rain is a-comin’. You’ll easily have no clue it’s raining when you sleep inside this comfortable bivy!

Pros

This is the ideal bivy for when you want to setup up camp quickly, curl up and go to sleep. The craftsmen ship of the tent is awesome, sleeping out in serious rain will keep you 99% dry. The window on the top is create for star gazing and fresh mountain air while keeping the bugs out.

Cons

Its not 100% weather proof, its close but too many of our test show that you will get a little damp in a rain storm from your bag touching the material. My biggest problem with this bivy is the condensation issue. During cold nights, when you are all zipped up, the tent doesn't allow for much breathing so between your breath and sweat - you are going to see moisture problems in the morning.

Summary

This is one of the best bivy sacks on the market. Its size is perfect for tall and short people alike. The window netting area is large and allows for a full view at night. The design of the bag is unmatched, and the quality of the material is idea of long lasting camping equipment.
